Against the Grain

Against the Grain Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides life skills and educational training to unwed mothers and at-risk youth in Franklin. ATG volunteers teach classes in parenting, budgeting, resume writing and interviewing.

Working with an average of 50 to 60 mothers at a time, ATG has helped nearly 200 women since its inception in 2003. For instance, a partnership with Williamson Christian College allows ATG moms to enroll in classes for $15 a week. Franklin Christian Church works with ATG to promote economic prosperity as well as spiritual growth.

ATG volunteers tutor nearly 100 kids per week ranging in age from 3 to 12 and dinner is provided with each tutoring session.

The goal is to build a community for single moms and provide a community around them that will encourage and support them while they take steps to get out of poverty.”
